RF Microneedling: What to Know

Microneedling is a popular cosmetic procedure at medical spas. But adding the term “radiofrequency” takes this buzz-worthy med spa treatment to the next level. A previous article addressed the benefits of microneedling using SkinPen. Next, let’s go over the benefits, results, and costs of radiofrequency microneedling.

Radiofrequency Microneedling, or RF microneedling, uses the same technique as the standard version but with a slight twist. The microneedling resurfaces the epidermis, the top layer of the skin, and the radiofrequency promotes the regeneration of collagen and elastin fibers as it reaches deeper into the dermis, the middle layer of the skin.

The combination of microneedling and radiofrequency waves results in a glowing, radiant, and younger-looking complexion.

What is Radiofrequency Microneedling?

Microneedling (collagen induction therapy) creates tiny skin punctures using ultra-fine needles. This minimally invasive procedure activates your body’s natural healing abilities, producing new collagen and elastin. But with the added radiofrequency waves, this treatment goes deeper into the layers of your skin. The RF technology delivers a controlled heat that causes your skin to constrict, tighten, and tone to reveal a more youthful complexion. As a result, patients usually see improvement in their skin’s overall health and faster results when combining microneedling with radiofrequency technology.

If you want to go above and beyond the results of radiofrequency microneedling, you can add platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to your service for an additional fee. At the time of your appointment, your technician will do a blood draw and place it into a centrifuge machine to separate the platelets. Then after the microneedling is complete, they will apply the platelets to the treated area. This added treatment can speed up your healing process and maximize your treatment results.

What are the benefits of RF Microneedling?

RF microneedling is a skin resurfacing and rejuvenating procedure with many skin-improving benefits. This treatment is known to:

  • Brighten tone and texture
  • Correct hyperpigmentation
  • Improve acne
  • Lift and tighten sagging skin
  • Minimize age and sun spots
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Shrink pores
  • Soften the appearance of scars

Why Lumenis Legend Pro for Microneedling?

At Complexions Med Spa, we use Lumenis Legend Pro technology. With some technologies on the market, they use needles to puncture the skin, and the radiofrequency energy triggers after the needles are entirely in the skin. However, the Legend Pro technology, VoluDerm™, is different. It uses ultra-thin electrodes that “thermally ablate” the skin so that it goes beyond the surface layers of the skin.

Using VoluDerm™ reduces unwanted side effects, and patients usually report less discomfort, bleeding, and pain during the procedure than other microneedling options. Ultimately, the powerful combination of this technology delivers immediate and long-lasting results.

What to expect?

Within 24 hours to 3 days from your procedure, tiny micro-scabs will form in the treatment area. They will naturally shed off over the week following your treatment, so it’s important not to scratch or peel them off. In addition, you may experience itching, redness, and swelling. It’s essential to be aware of your role in this process and follow all pre-and post-treatment instructions, such as staying out of the indirect or direct sun. Your aesthetician will provide detailed instructions before or on the day of your appointment.

Radiofrequency microneedling for aging

Is this skin resurfacing treatment right for me?

RF microneedling is suitable for all skin types and is an excellent option to improve your skin without chemical peels or surgery naturally. However, this technology is unsafe if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, or any implants (electronic or metal) in the treatment area. In addition, although rare, side effects of this procedure can include damage to the skin’s texture, redness, swelling, bruising, and itching. Therefore, we recommend you consult your dermatologist and licensed aesthetician to ensure that this treatment will work for you.

What is the cost?

The cost of microneedling depends on many factors. It can depend on location, experience, the number of treatments you need, and more. At Complexions Med Spa the price for radiofrequency microneedling starts at $425 for a single session. Since most patients typically need anywhere from 4 to 6 sessions to achieve their desired results, we provide packages to save you money.
