Microneedling: Get the details, benefits, and costs

Professional collagen induction therapy, also known as microneedling, is becoming increasingly popular in helping individuals improve their skin’s overall appearance. It creates micro-injuries in the skin, which triggers the body to produce more collagen and elastin molecules, increasing elasticity and firmness. This treatment is minimally invasive and can be performed right in the comfort of your home or at a specialized clinic. But ultimately, we recommend that you get this done professionally for maximum results and to ensure you do not accidentally injure your skin by doing it yourself.

If you are looking for professional microneedling options, there are several options you can choose from depending on where you go. At Complexions Med Spa by Northern Oklahoma Dermatology, we use SkinPen Precision Microneedling and Radiofrequency Microneedling by Lumenis. This article will focus on microneedling, its benefits, how SkinPen works, and the results you can expect.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

Microneedling treats wrinkles, scarring, discoloration, and other skin issues, making it an excellent option for many looking to have smoother and younger-looking skin. The benefits of this therapy include increased collagen production for long-term results, no downtime, and minimal side effects.

The treatment may vary depending on individual needs but generally consists of multiple sessions spaced out over time. Your aesthetician will discuss how many sessions you will need based on your skin and goals.

Microneedling is ideal for:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Dark spots from aging or sun damage
  • Acne and shrinks pores

SkinPen Microneedling

How does microneedling work?

SkinPen Precision microneedling is a treatment that naturally boosts collagen production to reduce the appearance of aging, acne scars, and uneven skin tone. It uses microneedles – tiny sterilized needles – to create mini channels into the skin’s surface, which induces natural collagen production and amplifies cell renewal.

The SkinPen treatment uses three simple steps to activate the skin’s natural healing process. After each session, the skin begins to heal, looking more renewed and rejuvenated. SkinPen is only used in professional settings and delivers dramatic results without using heat or chemicals.

Step 1:

SkinPen’s microneedles penetrate the skin’s surface, triggering a natural immune response to disinfect, remove debris, increase blood flow, and activate the creation of new tissue.

Step 2:

The tiny holes created by SkinPen rebuild new skin cells that include collagen proteins. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.

Step 3:

New dermal tissues form and create an environment rich in collagen and elastin proteins, which improve skin quality, visibly reducing facial acne scars and neck wrinkles. This process leaves the skin more smooth, radiant, and younger-looking.

Why is microneedling good for your skin?

Microneedling encourages your body to naturally create collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins in the skin. But, as we get older, these proteins break down, causing those unwanted fine lines and wrinkles. Microneedling can help reactivate collagen and elastin, improving your skin’s overall condition and leaving your skin more vibrant and youthful, and minimizing any scarring from acne.

What can you expect before, during, and after treatment?

Before:

A question often asked is, does microneedling hurt? Admittedly, it can be uncomfortable; however, a light numbing cream is administered topically to the skin first. This step helps to ensure maximum comfort during the treatment.

During:

SkinPen Precision creates controlled microchannels in the skin to elicit your body’s natural wound-healing cascade. This healing process works as the site of treatment and remodels the tissue, which results in new collagen and elastin, giving your skin a younger, firmer, and radiant appearance.

After:

Following your treatment, your skin may appear slightly pink or red, similar to a mild sunburn. Depending on your skin, this may last anywhere from 2-7 days after the treatment. Make sure to follow any additional instructions your aesthetician provides to see maximum results.

Women getting microneedling treatment

When will I see results from microneedling?

You may see results after one treatment, but more than one appointment is usually required to reach your desired results. Your skin will continue to improve over the next three to six months following your treatments.

Need more encouragement? In clinical studies, 85% of patients said they were satisfied with their Skin Pen treatment. Additionally, 94% of patients noticed an improvement in their neck and wrinkles after one month. And it’s always great when you get recommendations; 90% would recommend microneedling to their family and friends.

Skin Pen is a minimally invasive procedure with little to no downtown compared to surgeries and even some chemical peels.

Will it work for me?

SkinPen works for women and men and all Fitzpatrick Skin Types I – VI. Plus, microneedling is an excellent treatment you can continue to do for years to come, especially when appointments are spaced out and overseen by qualified professionals.

Is it safe?

SkinPen has a patented and single-use sterile needle cartridge created with safety in mind. A custom-designed Bio-Sheath surrounds the SkinPen to prevent cross-contamination between procedures.

Microneedling is a safe treatment that typically offers visible results even after the first session. In addition, this procedure will leave you looking younger without having to go under a surgeon’s knife or use harsh chemicals. Overall, microneedling is ideal for those seeking a more natural anti-aging solution.

Who should not get microneedling?

Although it’s great for all skin types, there are a few exceptions.
SkinPen is not for patients with the following:

  • Active skin cancer
  • Open wounds or sores
  • Active acne
  • Infected or irritated skin in the treatment areas
  • Allergy to stainless steel
  • Allergy to anesthetics
  • Hemorrhagic bleeding disorder
  • Hemostatic bleeding dysfunction
  • Women who are pregnant or nursing
  • Using drugs with the ingredient isotretinoin, such as Accutane.

Talk to your doctor to make sure this is right for you. Collagen induction therapy is not for everyone, so it’s essential to speak with a licensed professional before starting any regimen. You can set up an appointment with your dermatologist or a free consultation with our licensed aestheticians. They can determine if microneedling will work for you.

Blood draw for PRP microneedling

Boost results with PRP microneedling

If you want to boost your results with microneedling, consider adding platelet-rich plasma (PRP). We all have platelets in our blood, and PRP is a popular method of accelerating the body’s anti-aging and natural healing responses.

If you decide to add PRP to your microneedling treatment, here’s what to expect:

  1. Drawing the Blood: You will have to do a small blood draw from your arm by our fully licensed professional, Angelina Boulanger. She’s a licensed aesthetician and LPN (practical nurse).
  2. Spinning the Blood: The tube containing your blood goes in a medical device called a centrifuge, which separates your blood into layers. One of these layers contains your platelets, which we will use in the procedure. This step is done on-site and on the day of your appointment.
  3. Using the Blood: Your dermatologist or licensed aesthetician will inject the blood that contains the high concentration of platelets into your face using a syringe or microneedling device.

While PRP may sound intimidating and maybe even a bit scary, some patients find that PRP helps:

  • Reduce wrinkles
  • Lift sagging skin
  • Minimize deep creases
  • Improve complexion
  • Diminish the appearance of acne scars

Typically, PRP is considered safe for most people; however, it’s not for those with one of the following medical conditions:

  • Hepatitis C
  • HIV or AIDS
  • Any blood cancer
  • Cardiovascular disease, which requires taking a blood thinner
  • Skin cancer in the area to be treated

These conditions affect your platelets, making them unable to deliver the expected results. Therefore, under these circumstances, we would not recommend adding PRP to your microneedling treatment. Want to know for sure? Set up a free consultation so we can review your medical history together and determine if PRP or the standard microneedling treatment can work for you.

How much does microneedling cost?

The costs may vary depending on where you go and the type of microneedling you select. Most patients need more than one treatment; therefore, purchasing a package is the ideal way to save on this procedure.

A single session of microneedling is $325.

Two sessions equal $575, which saves you $75.

If you want three sessions, the total equals $775, which makes each session $258.33. So with this package, you save the most money at $200.

The cost will be $325 per session if you require four or more appointments. And if you want to add PRP to each treatment, it would be an extra $100 per session.
